Research seminars with special collections

Ghent University Library supports research seminars that make use of special and heritage collections to address specific research questions. Both teaching with original materials and small-scale presentations or exhibitions can be facilitated. An important partner in this process is the Vandenhove Centre, located next to the Boekentoren, where the exhibition functions as both a form of presentation and a mode of knowledge production.

Because research seminars often follow a strict semester schedule, the standard procedure for exhibition loans is not always feasible. Clear agreements with the lecturer(s) involved are therefore essential. From the outset, the research question, available space and preferred format guide the development of the seminar.

The full loan process — from delivery and condition reporting to insurance and logistics — is integrated into the educational trajectory. Digital reproductions can be requested via scanning on demand. Consolidating requests through a single contact point for example ensures a smooth organisation.

Staff at the Boekentoren are happy to provide further information at the start of a seminar. Questions about research seminars using special collections can be directed to collection curator Hendrik Defoort.
